Indian nationals overtake Albanians to become second largest Channel migrants group
Indians have overtaken Albanians to become the second biggest contingent crossing the Channel in small boats so far this year, according to Home Office data. Immigration experts believe Indians seeking to live and work in the UK illegally are targeting Channel crossings because it is now seen as an established route into Britain for economic migrants. In the first three months of this year, 675 Indian migrants were detected crossing the English Channel in small boats, second only to 909 Afghans, who agencies say are primarily asylum seekers fleeing the Taliban. That is almost the same as the total 683 Indians who crossed the Channel during the whole of last year, and 10 times the rate at the beginning of 2022. By contrast, the…

All Delhi Bar Association’s resolution against daily hearing of same-sex marriage pleas
A day after the Bar Council of India opposed the grant of legal recognition of same-sex marriage in India, the All Delhi bar association on Monday passed a resolution against the day-to-day hearing about recognition of same-sex marriage. The resolution states that the social ramifications of the ongoing proceedings before the Supreme Court are colossal and have the potential to have an unintended impact on the fabric of society. “There are certain issues that are deeply entrenched in societal norms, values, and beliefs. These issues require careful consideration and public debate, as any decision or action taken without societal acceptance may have far-reaching consequences,” the resolution reads. “Such issues require a broad-based consensus that can only be achieved through public…

Joe Biden says ‘yes’ to re-election bid
He’s been asked so many times if he’ll run for president again; whether he’ll seek that second term. “It’s my intention…” is his stock answer. But tonight, on the eve of the day he is expected to formally announce, Joe Biden confirmed that intention to Sky News. “Are you going to run again, sir?” I asked in the Rose Garden as he disappeared into the Oval Office. “Yes!” he told me. It’s been most anticipated announcement in Washington DC. He seems to have cleared the self-imposed hurdle: his family’s approval. I’ll admit I was sceptical. I had wondered if First Lady Jill Biden would tell him “enough”. He would, after all, be 82 at the time of re-election and 86…

Ukraine’s head of military intelligence (HUR), who is in charge of operations on foreign soil, instructed officers to prepare for “mass strikes” on February 24 this year, with “everything the HUR had”. Plans for strikes on Russia by Ukraine are likely to have made officials anxious in Washington, as the US has publicly warned that the weapons they supply to Ukraine should not be used to hit targets across the border. Steve Barclay has written to General Secretary Pat Cullen, saying the RCN does not have a mandate to strike on May 2 – the final planned day for 48 hours of industrial action. In recent days the Health Secretary had urged the RCN to call off the strikes, which are the most extreme in the union’s history, targeting A&E and urgent cancer care. The legal action follows concerns from NHS Employers that the mandate for nurses to strike expires at the end of 1 May. The action is based on a ballot which ended…
