New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday targetted Congress party for being indifferent to Dr BR Ambedkar, Dalit icon and chief architect of the Indian Constitution, whose contribution had been far more than the family for which this had been done.

Speaking after dedicating the Dr Ambedkar International Centre to the nation, Mr Modi, stepping up his attack against the Congress, said attempts to erase Babasaheb Ambedkar’s contribution had failed because ”he has been more influential in the minds of people, much more than the family (Gandhis) for which all this was done.”

Elaborating, he said it took 23 years to complete this project for which he blamed the Congress Governments for the delay.

The party that was counting on Dalit votes was taking the icon’s name but had conveniently forgotten him and was now invoking Baba (Lord Shiva) for political mileage. The swipe was aimed at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi who had defended his numerous visits to temples in Gujarat claiming his family were Shiv Bhakts.

The PM, who also unveiled two statues of the architect of the Constitution, said his government had realised Babasaheb’s dream of an inclusive India that gave equal opportunities to every citizen irrespective of caste, creed and faith.

He told the gathering ”you will be surprised to know that some 60 per cent beneficiaries of the government’s self-employment loan scheme that transformed the meaning of jobs in the country are Dalits, backwards and tribals. Till now, some 9.75 crore loan (applications) have been accepted and people have been given credits worth over Rs 4 lakh crore,” Mr Modi said.

The country was indebted to Ambedkar for his contributions to nation-building, he said and reiterated the government’s commitment to the rights of the Dalits, backward classes and the disadvantaged people.
