Imagine this: one fine day you get up in the morning and randomly glance towards the mirror. You notice something different but you can’t exactly put your finger on it. But, when you do look up close, to your utter horror you see hair growth on your chin area. And it keeps getting dense with every passing day. Sounds like a plot straight out of a horror film? Well it’s not.

Unwanted facial hair is a problem that some women face and absolutely dread. It’s only natural that women are concerned with sudden hair growth spurt, but it’s imperative to know the causes behind it. After all, it’s not random. These conditions play a vital role in growth of unwanted hair on your chin:

Male Hormones Are To Be Blamed

And by that we don’t mean blame your partner. Even your body produces male hormones called androgens. And it’s absolutely fine if it’s in small doses. However, the problem arises when there is an excess production of androgens. But, you must note that the condition is not life-threatening or medically harmful. Although, researchers from National Institute of Health, USA, claim that genetics most likely play a role here.

PCOS Is a Responsible Factor

If you suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS as it is commonly called, you may find hair on your chin area. “If you have coarse, dark hairs in these areas, the condition is called hirsutism. Such hair growth is more typical of men. A common cause of hirsutism is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS and other hormone conditions that cause unwanted hair growth may also have acne, problems with menstrual periods, trouble losing weight, and diabetes,” states a report published in the New York Times.

Ever Heard Of The Cushing Syndrome?

“Cushing syndrome develops when a woman is exposed to high levels of cortisol, often seen in women taking steroids. Corticosteroid medications such as prednisone and prednisolone used to treat arthritis and asthma can cause Cushing syndrome and produce unwanted facial hair,” states a report published in livestrong.com.

You must note that pituitary gland, at times, produces excess of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH hormones), which releases additional cortisol in the system.

Check Your Prescription

Ladies, you’ve got to be more careful with your medication. Just don’t pop any pill that you are prescribed. What you don’t know is that faulty medication too can lead to unwanted hair growth. For instance, medicines with components such as testosterone and cyclosporine can lead to the condition. Also, using more than one milliliter of minoxidil and steroids such as anabolic are really bad for you.
