At 2,701, Maharashtra logs highest daily Covid cases in four months
Maharashtra recorded 2,701 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday. This is the highest number of new Covid cases in nearly four months. Mumbai recorded 1,765 fresh infections, a jump from the 1,242 cases recorded on Tuesday.
This is the first time since February 2 that Mumbai has reported cases in four digits for two consecutive days. Mumbai reported Covid cases in four digits for the first time on Tuesday since February 2, when the city had reported 1,128 cases.
Mumbai registered an 83 per cent hike in Covid cases on Tuesday.
COVID TESTING UP
As Covid cases are rising in Mumbai, municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal had directed health officials to ramp up Covid-19 testing. The city civic body has increased daily Covid-19 tests to over 15,000 and on Monday evening, a total of 17,145 tests were conducted.
Out of 1,242 new patients, 1,168 are asymptomatic, while the 76 symptomatic patients were admitted to hospitals in Mumbai, the civic body said. Most private hospitals have no Covid admissions at present.
The overall growth rate of cases in Mumbai was 0.070 per cent for the period between May 31 to June 6.
MASK MANDATE
The Maharashtra government on June 4 asked citizens to wear masks in public places except open spaces.
The state government expressed concern over the rising number of Covid cases to the district authorities. Additional Chief Secretary, Dr Pradeep Vyas, in a letter to all district authorities, gave out several orders including ones for mandating the wearing of masks in public places.
“Mask in closed public spaces like trains, buses, cinemas, auditoriums, offices, hospitals, colleges, schools is a must,” he said.
