Javed Akhtar threatened me for not apologising to Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut tells Mumbai court
Actor Kangana Ranaut told a court in Mumbai that Bollywood lyricist, Javed Akhtar threatened and insulted her after she refused to apologise to actor Hrithik Roshan and has committed the offence of extortion. The actor on Monday appeared before the court in connection with a defamation complaint filed against her by Javed Akhtar.
Last year, Kagana Ranaut had registered a complaint against Akhtar and following this, she recorded her statement before the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate court as part of procedure. During the recording of her statement, Ranaut had requested the court that no one should be present except her sister and lawyer. The court had accepted this request of hers and advocate Jay Bharadwaj, representing Akhtar, also stepped out of the court room.

In court, her sister and witness Rangoli Chandel was present when Ranaut submitted that when she refused to accede to Akhtar’s demand to apologise to Roshan, Akhtar got upset and insulted her modesty. She alleged that he threatened her with adverse consequences from the Roshan family, who he claimed had influences in the government and could have her jailed.

Kangana stated that Akhtar had said, “We will not take time to put up impostors, then it will be open to the public to know that your affair was not with Hrithik but with impostors, then your face will be blackened, there will be so much infamy in the public that you will have no other way except suicide. We have evidence, they have all the ministries, apologize and save yourself. A girl from a good family will be drown in shame. If you have little shame to save your honor, then don’t insist.”

Akhtar provoked her to commit suicide, causing mental disturbance, her statement added. Ranaut in her complaint alleged that Akhtar committed “serious crimes” against her.
She claimed in the plea that to lower her public image and give a favourable public verdict in support of the co-star, Akhtar allegedly “forced Ranaut to tender a written apology to the co-star” which she claimed was “extortion of an apology”, according to her lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee.
Ranaut had sought issuance of process against Javed Akhtar under Sections 383, 384, 387 (extortion), 503, 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (outraging modesty of woman) of the Indian Penal Code. This complaint was filed after Akhtar had registered a criminal complaint in the Andheri Magistrate court against Ranaut in 2020 for criminal defamation.
