Unfortunate Love Life Of Parveen Babi And Mahesh Bhatt

Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s name has often been linked with actresses in the industry. The 70s filmmaker has been linked with many leading ladies of the town, however, one of his most controversial relationships remains with the late Bollywood actress Parveen Babi.

Parveen Babi And Mahesh Bhatt’s Love Story

Apparently, the two celebrities once remained in a very controversial relationship with each other. Their relationship began after the actress broke up with Kabir Bedi soon after which she met Mahesh Bhatt in 1977, back in the time Parveen was one of the leading ladies of the town. The actress gave some very popular hit movies like Amar Akbar Anthony, Shaan, and Do Aur Do Panch at that time.

While on the other hand, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt was married at that time, however, despite many barriers in the way the filmmaker went all down for the actress and they both started dating each other in 1977, and the two found a perfect partner and friend in each other.

Opening up about his relationship with Parveen Babi, Mahesh Bhatt once said, “I met her way back in the late 1970s when we were both living dangerously. She had just split with Kabir Bedi and was quite heartbroken. The first thing that I liked about Parveen Babi was her smile, her wit, and her intelligence. She was one of the most elegant, well-read, and generous women I’ve known in my life. I was very close to her and had a relationship with her from 1977 to 1980. For me, she was the ultimate glamour girl, the first woman who had an alternate morality and was never ashamed of the way she lived life.”

Until, Parveen Babi was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, talking about the same Mahesh Bhatt revealed one of the incidents that will surely send a chill down your spine too, he revealed, “Parveen was dressed in film costume and sat curled up in the corner between the wall and the bed. Her gait was beast-like. She had a kitchen knife in her hand. ‘What are you doing?’ I asked. She said, ‘Shhsssh…! Don’t talk! This room is bugged. They’re trying to kill me; they’re going to drop a chandelier on me.’ She held my hand and led me outside. I saw her mother look helplessly at me. Her gaze revealed that this episode had happened before, it was not the first time”.

End Of Parveen Babi And Mahesh Bhatt’s Love Life

Parveen Babi’s health deteriorated with time, the filmmaker once revealed that he took the actress and escaped the town so that she could find solace away from stardom. However, despite many efforts, the filmmaker couldn’t help his lady love. In October 1979, the filmmaker left the actress in the care of his friend and came back to Mumbai. Apparently, the filmmaker believed that he was a part of Parveen’s problem and he decided that distancing himself would be the best option for both Parveen and himself.

Mahesh returned to his wife and family, however, the actress followed him soon after, at that time the filmmaker realized that his relationship with the actress was doomed and there was no hope left for both of them, talking about his break up, he once said, “I understood that the relationship was doomed and that I was deluding myself in hoping for a happy ending. The only person who had cushioned her from ECT, who had nursed her and had suggested a way out, she didn’t want to hear his truth! UG had fathered me and mothered her. There was no way the party would continue. We broke up in 1980”.

The End For Parveen Babi

In 2005, the inevitable happened, after the actress was found dead in her apartment, apparently it was suspected that for almost 2 days the actress’s body remained unfound in her apartment. While filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt took the responsibility for Babi’s burial, he revealed, “For me, Parveen died twice—the first time when she had her first mental breakdown and was with me — the personality I had known completely collapsed, like a house of cards. And now, the second time, with her physical death. I would like to remember her as the girl who brought Bollywood to the cover of Time magazine and who died an anonymous death.”

Although their love life did not have a happy ending, it definitely does remind her fans that nothing is eternal, even love.
