Top Gun: Maverick is now the biggest ‘part two’ sequel of all time

Top: Gun Maverick has broken another record, months after soaring to the top of the box office.

After several delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Top Gun sequel opened in May to rave reviews across the board from audiences and critics alike.

As the weeks passed by, the movie continued to be one of the strongest contenders at the box office and set new records for Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend. Its 16th weekend alone brought in another $3.17 million.

Now, Top: Gun Maverick has surpassed other successful sequels such as Frozen II to become the highest-grossing second film of all time.

To date, the movie has made $1.45 billion at the global box office and a staggering $705.65 million at the US box office, according to Forbes.

Previously, there had only been one ‘part two’ sequel that grossed over $600 million domestically, which was Pixar’s Incredibles 2Maverick surpassed this record almost two months ago and continued to climb in the domestic box office.

It has outshone the biggest franchise blockbusters that were released this year including DC’s Batman, Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Pixar’s Lightyear.

The record-breaking sequel picks up 30 years after the events of the 1986 original and follows Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell as he returns to the US Air Force to train new recruits.

The original was a career-defining movie for a then-young Tom Cruise and the sequel has become the actor’s biggest ever movie worldwide, overtaking his previous record held by Mission: Impossible – Fallout ($791.1 m).

Despite its astounding success, Top Gun: Maverick could lose its title as the biggest ‘part two’ sequel of all time as more movies drop this autumn.

Marvel will release the Black Panther sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while James Cameron returns with a sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time with Avatar: The Way of the Water.

Miles Teller, who joined the franchise as Goose’s son Bradley Bradshaw aka Rooster, is already said to be discussions about a third movie.
