Cyclone warning for Odisha? Here’s what weather dept said about the cyclonic circulation over north Andaman Sea

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar stated on Wednesday that it has not issued any kind of forecast for cyclone so far. And the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)’s regional centre also advised people of Odisha not to pay heed to rumours.

According to IMD Director General Dr. Mrutunjay Mohapatra, there is no cyclone threat for Odisha in the next seven days. “A cyclonic circulation has formed over the north Andaman Sea yesterday, which is gradually weakening. There is a likelihood of the formation of another similar system around October 17-18. Today’s forecast indicates a concentration of the system into low pressure. According to our analysis, there are no chances of intensification of the system into a cyclone,” he told Odia news channels.

The Meteorological Centre also took Twitter to quash cyclone rumours. “The India Meteorological Department has not made any forecast on the cyclone or even given any indication in this regard. Please keep away from rumours,” the IMD’s regional centre tweeted.

The weather agency stated that making predictions about any weather condition seven days in advance is not scientific, said PTI. “We are working 24 hours a day to provide accurate weather-related information. So please stay away from rumours,” it said.

Odisha is not in any danger, Dr. Mohapatra told the news channel. He also added that IMD is known for its ‘pinpoint’ accuracy in cyclone prediction, said PTI.

Senior weather scientist Umashankar Dash said “The IMD has just indicated the formation of cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal between October 14 and October 20. All cyclonic circulations do not take the shape of cyclone.”

Infact, at a meeting with state government representatives on October 10, PTI reported director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar Dr. HR Biswas as saying that there was no possibility of any cyclone in Odisha in the next 15 days.

Along with that, PIB Odisha also tweeted about the matter and advise people to stay away from rumors. “IMD has not issued any warning or forecast for any kind of cyclonic storm in #Odisha. So people are requested to stay away from “rumors” @mcbbsr,” PIB Odisha tweeted.
