20-year-old Indian student dies after being hit, dragged by truck in Canada
An Indian student, who was crossing the road on a cycle, died after being hit and dragged by a pickup truck in Canada, reported news agency PTI, quoting media reports. The fatal crash happened after the student, 20, was struck and was dragged by a pickup town in Toronto, police said.
Despite emergency services trying their level best to free and revive the cyclist, he was pronounced dead. The collision happened at the intersection of Yonge Street and St Clair Avenue at about 4:30 pm on Wednesday evening, police said.
According to a report published in news website cbc.ca, the victim’s cousin has identified him as Kartik Saini who came to Canada from India in 2021.
The reports suggest that Kartik was a student of Sheridan College.”Our community is deeply saddened by the sudden death of Kartik. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, peers and professors,” the college said in an email on Friday.
Kartik’s cousin stated that he was speaking from Karnal in Haryana and said that Kartik’s body will be sent to India as soon as possible for proper burial.
Constable Laura Brabant, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, told PTI, “The investigation into the collision is on. The determination on whether charges are laid or not takes time as the investigators have to conduct a full investigation first. This takes time and is not a rushed process.” (sic)
In September this year, an Indian student Satwinder Singh died as he sustained bullet injuries in shooting rampage in Canada’s Ontario province. Satwinder Singh, who obtained an MBA in marketing in India, was a student at Conestoga College.
In April, a 21-year-old student Kartik Vasudev, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, died after being allegedly shot at the Glen Road entrance to Sherbourne TTC station in St James Town. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
