In violence-hit Manipur, Jiribam shows a way to peace

The Assam Rifles troopers interact with the villagers at Jiribam in Manipur.

Kolkata: On May 3 when the entire Manipur valley exploded in the ethnic strife, the ripples were felt also in Jiribam which has a fair population mix of the affected communities– Kuki and Meitei.

According to sources, the Assam Rifles (AR), which have a presence in Jiribam town and adjoining areas, quickly mobilized their columns of troops and reached the potential flashpoints in time to dissuade the mob, who had gathered to indulge in acts of violence and vandalism.

Quick action by the columns in the following days saved a church and many houses from being burnt and vandalized, official sources told this newspaper. The AR troops, thereafter in close coordination with state police and civil administration, engaged community leaders to spread the message of peace and harmony.

Active patrolling and domination prevented inimical elements from their nefarious design. Many check posts erected by the vigilantes were destroyed and a large number of weapons seized, sources added. In addition, proactive intervention led to rumours being arrested and situation remaining under control.

Relief camps were visited and relief in terms of medical camps, rations, water supply was provided. Working round the clock with the civil administration, the situation was nipped in the bud and controlled in this western gateway to Manipur.

All efforts are now being directed to encourage people to return to their homes and start their daily life in harmony with others, said an AR official anonymously.

As on date, nearly 200 people have returned to their locations and the signs are encouraging, he added with a hope that Jiribam will emerge as an example for others to emulate in coming days.
