Telangana seeks information on AP’s Godavari-Banakacherla link project

The project is estimated to cost over Rs 80,000 crore; aims to divert water from Godavari to Rayalaseema region in Krishna basin

Hyderabad: The State government has written to the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) requesting detailed information about the Godavari-Banakacherla link project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government. The project, estimated to cost over Rs 80,000 crore, aims to divert water from Godavari to Rayalaseema region in Krishna basin.

State ENC General G Anil Kumar urged GRMB Chairman to provide information on the project, which is intended to address drinking water and irrigation needs in Rayalaseema and the coastal districts of Nellore and Prakasam. The Central Water Commission (CWC) has also approached both the GRMB and the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) for information on the project.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been actively pursuing the project and has reportedly obtained an in-principal nod from the Centre for its implementation. The project has sparked concerns in Telangana, with officials fearing that the diversion of water from the Godavari basin could impact their share of water resources.

The CWC’s request for detailed information from the river management boards highlights the growing tensions between the two States over water sharing. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to assess the potential impact of the project on the State’s water entitlement.
