Hyderabad: In what many are billing as a reformative step, the Telangana Prisons Department is establishing dedicated de-addiction centres named ‘Nivrutti’ to rehabilitate those involved in drug cases, across all the central prisons in the State.
These de-addiction centres, ‘Nivrutti’, signifying freedom from addiction, inner peace, and reformation, are being funded by Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
Prison authorities point out that the initiative is a milestone in the State’s reformative journey, symbolising a commitment to care, correction, and rehabilitation of wrong doers. “It is a step to help inmates battling addiction, ensuring that efforts are made to control the demand side by sending addicts to these centres rather than letting them ruin their lives,” said a senior official from the Prison Department.
As per reliable sources, nearly 15 per cent of the inmates are involved in drug-related cases, and this proportion can be reduced by effectively implementing government rehabilitation programmes within prisons.
“Instead of granting bail, addicts could be sent to de-addiction centres for real reform. While current efforts are largely focused on the supply side of drugs, it is imperative to simultaneously address the demand side through such initiatives to effectively control the problem,” officials from TG Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), said.
