Aadhaar not must for admission of patients in govt hospitals, rules Telangana HC

Government Pleader informs court that government hospitals are duly admitting and treating the patients without mandatorily insisting on producing Aadhaar

Hyderabad: Aadhaar card is not mandatory for admission of patients in government hospitals, ruled the Telangana High Court on Friday while disposing of a Public Interest Litigation case.

The PIL Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara, was dealing with a PIL filed by Srinivas Byreddy, a practicing advocate. He challenged the action of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in denying treatment to patients who failed to produce an Aadhaar card.

On the earlier occasion, the counsel for petitioner informed the court that the OGH had refused treatment to a woman on the ground that the woman failed to produce an Aadhaar Card.

The Government Pleader submitted medical records before the court stating that the woman was admitted and given treatment despite non-disclosure of Aadhaar card.

The Government Pleader also informed the court that the government hospitals are duly admitting and treating the patients without mandatorily insisting on producing Aadhaar cards. Recording the said submissions, the Bench disposed of the matter.
