Action on Nupur Sharma was not under pressure: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said the action taken by the BJP towards former party spokesperson Nupur Sharma was not under any pressure. He added, “We cannot justify what she said. But that is not terrorism. Beheading people is terrorism.”

Naqvi was speaking at the India Today Conclave East in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Naqvi also said, “Nobody supports what Nupur said, but people can’t cut other people’s throats for it. We are a secular country.”

NUPUR SHARMA ROW

The BJP high command suspended national spokesperson Nupur Sharma on June 5 over her controversial remarks on the Prophet Muhammad which she made during a TV debate.

Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the Prophet were followed by violent protests across the country. The first of the many protests broke out in Kanpur on June 3 after a Muslim organization gave a call to shut shops in Parade Market over the remarks made by Nupur Sharma. The initial protest in Kanpur was followed by nationwide outrage in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, and Jharkhand, among others.

On June 28, a Hindu tailor in Udaipur, Kanhaiya Lal was murdered by two men who chopped his head off and later recorded a video admitting to killing the man over a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma.

A week earlier on June 21, a 54-year-old chemist was hacked to death in Maharashtra’s Amravati for allegedly making a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma.
