Afzalgunj firing case: Assailants taking shelter in southern States, say cops

Investigation officials suspect the assailants were keeping a tab on the latest news coverage on the Bidar and Afzalgunj cases, and regularly changing their locations

Hyderabad: It is been a fortnight, and the police from four States are still hunting for those involved in the Afzalgunj firing and Bidar robbery cases. The robbers involved in the shooting incident, who were identified as Amit and Manish, are believed to have been involved in other offences across the country.

The Uttar Pradesh police had already announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh on the duo, who had stuck the State with a series of robberies in the last two years and had been on the run.

The duo, who reached Hyderabad on a two-wheeler on January 10 after opening fire on the bank staff in Bidar, robbed Rs 93 lakh. They shot at the manager of a private travel on January 16.

Later, they reached Secunderabad, where they bought bags and new clothes and went to Trimulgherry and escaped by various modes of transportation.

The Hyderabad Police examined the CCTV footage and technical evidence and concluded that the assailants were currently taking shelter in the southern States.

They tried to mislead the police and planned their escape route towards Uttar Pradesh and other northern parts of India. It was found that the duo took a ‘U’ turn from Trimulgherry and returned to Miyapur and Kukatpally.

From there, they reached Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh and took shelter for some days before going to Chennai via Chittoor district.

The investigation officials suspect the assailants were keeping a tab on the latest news coverage on the Bidar and Afzalgunj cases, and regularly changing their locations.
