‘Apna Career Bhul Gaye?’ Ganguly Roasted For Urging Virat Kohli To Be ‘Selfish’ In Asia Cup
After a gap of over a month, Virat Kohli will return to the cricket field and a comeback cannot get bigger than an India vs Pakistan clash. The two Asian giants are set to meet their Asia Cup campaign opener on Sunday (August 28) in Dubai.
All eyes will be on the former India captain Kohli, who has been struggling with his form for more than a couple of years.
Kohli’s last 100-plus score came during the home Test match against Bangladesh in 2019 and since then he has failed to hit a century across all formats of the game.
There have been many critics calling for Kohli’s exit from the Indian team but the team and management have backed the 33-year-old during this period.
Ahead of the all-important India vs Pakistan clash, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has advised Kohli to be ‘selfish’ in the tournament.
Ganguly, during an event in Kolkata, said that Kohli not only needs to score runs for India but needs to do it for himself.
“He needs to score runs not only for India but for himself. Hopefully, it will be a good season for him. We all are confident that he’ll come back,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by news agency PTI during an interaction on the sidelines of a media event in Kolkata. Fans didn’t like Ganguly’s advice for Kohli and slammed the former India captain for putting unnecessary pressure on the 33-year-old ahead of a big name.
Recently, Kohli had said that he understands his game and if he didn’t have the ability to counter different attacks and conditions, he wouldn’t have come this far in his career.
Ganguly too echoed Kohli’s thoughts and said that he is too big a player to not score runs and he will definitely turn things around quickly.
“He’s a very big player, there for a long time. I know he has his own formula to score runs. It’s not possible that players of his stature can’t have such a long lean patch, I know he will definitely score runs. If he was not a great player, he would not have scored so many runs for so long,” Ganguly maintained.
This backing and urging Kohli to score runs for himself shows how desperate the BCCI and its president is to see their superstar back in form and going all guns blazing.
If Kohli fits in the team’s scheme of things for the upcoming T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup next year, he needs to put in a big performance to silence the critics and ease pressure on himself as well as the team management.
