HYDERABAD: The Civil Liberties Committee (CLC) and the Indian Association of People Lawyers (IAPL) urged the government to bring the Advocates Protection Act to protect advocates from physical and verbal attacks.
Stating that the number of attacks was increasing on the profession as individuals and as an institution, P. Vishnu Vardhan Rao of the CLC and the IAPL’s M. Venkanna appealed to advocates to stand in solidarity with young advocate Yugandhar for his safety and security and for justice. They demanded legal action against all those who were involved in the attack on him.
Yugandhar was physically attacked at Tirumalagiri near Bhongir, by associates of a local MLA. In another incident, Cherlapally Central Prison superintendent Santhosh Kumar Roy attacked advocate D. Sureshkumar. In both these instances, the advocates were discharging their duty in the judicial institution.
They said that an FIR was registered regarding the attack on Yugandhar but it was not done under proper sections of the law so as to indirectly protect the perpetrators.
