Karimnagar: BRS activists on Tuesday staged a dharna at Markfed grounds in protest against its closure which prevented the locals from celebrating the Dasara festival scheduled for Thursday.
BRS workers led by town president Challa Harishankar sat in front of Markfed gate and raised slogans against Congress leaders for closing the ground by mounting pressure on officials.
Harishankar said people from surrounding areas had been celebrating Dasara in Markfed grounds since 2012 by forming a committee. It was purely a private programme and nothing to do with political affiliations, he said, and alleged that Congress leaders had closed the ground to prevent the local people from celebrating Ramleela.
He called on the Collector and Commissioner of Police to reopen the ground immediately. Otherwise, local youth and women would forcefully open the ground by breaking the lock, he warned.
