Carlos Alcaraz was forced to retire from his Rio Open first round match after injuring himself just two points into the match.

Replays showed how the 20-year-old suffering a nasty looking injury when planting his foot on the clay.

But just one game later, Alcaraz had his serve broken, shook Monteiro’s hand, and left the court shortly after, retiring from the match.

The Wimbledon champion was then seen limping out of the stadium and head straight onto a golf cart to take him away.

“Tomorrow I’ll have a test for my ankle and let’s see if it’s something serious or not,” said Alcaraz.

“I felt bad. That was the first impression I had. I was feeling pain once I fell down, so I thought it was going to be difficult to continue if I was still having those feelings.

“After a few points it didn’t feel better. I couldn’t move well and I knew that it was going to be impossible to continue.

“I thought it was going to get worse if I kept playing for such a long match and that’s why I chose to retire.”

Alcaraz had hoped to face Rafael Nadal in The Netflix Slam on March 3, while he will also be looking to defend his Indian Wells title later that month.

After the match, world number 117 Monteiro said it was ‘strange’ for an injury to occur so early in the match.

“On the court it didn’t look so serious, but then I saw it in the big screen and it was a bad twist,” he said.

“Now I can only cheer for him to recover. He is a star, a dominant one in the new generation.”
