Falling rupee will make pharma imports costlier
The free fall of the rupee is continuing, racing towards an all-time record low of Rs.82 against the dollar. On Tuesday, the rupee-dollar value stood at Rs.81.58, up nearly 12 per cent from Rs.73 last September. The downside of the slide, however, was that a falling rupee would make pharma imports costlier as importers have to shell out more rupees per dollar. If a good was imported for $1 in September 2021, the price the importers paid in Indian rupees was Rs.73. For the same, Rs.81.58 will have to be paid now. That is Rs.8.58 more for the same product. The situation, which has triggered concerns across the pharma industry, presents Hyderabad, the life sciences capital of the country and the vaccine capital of…

My wife made me promise not to remarry after she died – but I fell in love again
My wife Nim passed away from cancer shortly after our 10-year wedding anniversary in 2018. She was 34 at the time and I was 33. I never imagined planning my wife’s funeral at that age. I said in my eulogy: ‘You never expect to be carrying your wife into the crematorium.’ Nim first started getting pain in her chest and stomach in March 2017, and after losing a lot of weight, her GP referred her to a consultant. At the end of January 2018, we finally got the results of her biopsy but it was the worst possible news. ‘Unfortunately, you have stomach cancer and your life will be cut short,’ the doctor said. We were both speechless initially, and tears quickly…

Cleaners at Amsterdam gallery ordered to let insects run wild in name of art
No vacuum cleaners and no feather dusters: that’s the order that has gone out to cleaning staff at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. As part of an exhibition exploring the changing perceptions of creepy-crawlies in art and science through the ages, the national museum of the Netherlands has been allowing its crevices and corners to go wild for the last three months. Julia Kantelberg, assistant curator, said they had been encouraged by Tomás Saraceno, an Argentinian artist based in Berlin, whose work is appearing in the show, to treasure the accumulation of spider webs wherever they may emerge. The webs are being treated, she said, as pieces of art, to be venerated – for now, at least – as if they were The Night Watch by Rembrandt…
