Second-hand smoke 10th biggest risk factor for cancer: Lancet study
Washington: People living in close proximity to those who smoke tobacco may have a higher risk of cancer as a new study published in The Lancet journal has found that second-hand smoking is the tenth biggest risk factor for the disease. Using results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) 2019 study, the researchers investigated how 34 behavioural, metabolic, environmental, and occupational risk factors contributed to deaths and ill health due to 23 cancer types in 2019. Changes in cancer burden between 2010 and 2019 due to risk factors were also assessed. Estimates of cancer burden were based on mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), a measure of years of life lost to death and years lived with…

Diabetes drug effective at reducing severity in Covid patients: Study
Metformin, a commonly prescribed diabetes medication, can help lower the odds of emergency department visits, hospitalisations, or death due to Covid-19 by over 50 per cent if prescribed early in onset of symptoms, finds a study. “Our trial suggests that metformin may reduce the likelihood of needing to go to the emergency room or be hospitalised for Covid-19,” said Carolyn Bramante, Assistant Professor of internal medicine and paediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School. The study examined whether metformin, low-dose fluvoxamine, an antidepressant; and ivermectin, an antiparasitic, or their combinations could serve as possible treatments to prevent ER visits or hospitalisation, as well as Long-Covid in 1,323 participants including pregnant women. The findings, published in the New England Journal…

Monkeypox may spread via close contact too: CDC
Hyderabad: In a twist to the ongoing outbreak of monkeypox in several countries, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of United States on Wednesday has said that physical intimacy between men was not the only mode of transmission and individuals could also get infected when they just come in close contact with monkeypox positive persons. In an article published in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID), a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by CDC, researchers from Stanford University described a case of monkeypox in a traveller who returned from UK to the United States who did not report any recent sexual contact. “This case highlighted the distinctiveness of clinical manifestations as they indicated potential routes of transmission during the 2022 multi-country outbreak…

Measles outbreak in Zimbabwe kills 157 unvaccinated children
Harare: A measles outbreak in Zimbabwe has killed 157 children, most of whom were unvaccinated due to their family’s religious beliefs, officials said. The measles outbreak was first reported in the eastern Manicaland province in early April and has since spread to all parts of the country. At least 2,056 cases have been reported and virtually all of the deaths have been children who were not vaccinated, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said. Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has invoked a law used to respond to disasters to deal with the outbreak, she said. The government says it is embarking on a mass vaccination campaign targeting children aged between 6 months and 15 years old and is engaging traditional and faith leaders to support the drive.…

Pets must be isolated from people infected with monkeypox: WHO
New Delhi: People infected with monkeypox must isolate their pets, said an official from the World Health Organization, after a report showed the first-ever case of human-to-dog transmission of the virus in France. In a Lancet report earlier this week, French researchers documented the first case of a dog with confirmed monkeypox infection that might have been acquired through human transmission. Earlier a monkeypox outbreak in the US was linked to prairie pet dogs, but no human to animal transmission was reported. According to Dr. Rosamund Lewis, WHO Technical Lead on monkeypox, the first human-to-dog transmission of the virus is new but not surprising, The Washington Post reported. “It has not been reported that dogs have been infected before. So, on…
