Jamia students break taboos around period; create reusable sanitary pads
New Delhi: Reshma, a resident of a slum in South Delhi, often wondered how sanitary napkins are made. Her inquisitiveness further increased when she learnt that menstrual pads can be made using natural products instead of plastic. Now further into her exploration, she works at a unit manufacturing “reusable and environment-friendly” pads invented by a group of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students. The unit is spearheading a change in a locality in Madanpur Khadar’s Shram Vihar where women do not talk about “lady’s problems” in front of men, let alone manufacture sanitary products under their guidance. “When bhiaya and didi came, we were very shy to speak about period in front of them but once we saw videos and learnt more…

Lucknow: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is of the view that social media platforms are posing new challenges to child safety. “Children are being manipulated on social media platforms, technically known as grooming and these agencies are not ready to cooperate. The government wants these companies to give parents the right to access to accounts of children on social media,” said Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson of NCPCR while talking to reporters. Claiming that the social media platforms chose to remain ignorant to concerns like phishing, grooming, cyber bullying and so on, he said: “We are not asking them to give the rights to strangers and therefore their dilly-dallying over engaging parents to monitor the social media use of…

Health and Tech: Electronic Health Records — Another tech advantage
Hyderabad: Imagine a scenario where the moment you walk into a government or a private healthcare facility, the care giver, with a few clicks on the computer is able to pull-out your entire healthcare history in a digital format, right from the day you were born to every single visit to the doctor you have made in your entire life, arranged linearly to enable the doctors quickly understand your medical history. The above scenario may sound a bit disconcerting or even probably raise fears about privacy, safety and data security. The varied history of Dakhni Urdu literature in south India
Zoë Woodbury High On the second floor of Hyderabad’s Salar Jung Museum lies an extensive library. Despite its sizeable collection of manuscripts and books spread across multiple rooms, it remains largely unknown to the museum’s many visitors. Among the many rare manuscripts housed at the Salar Jung Library, which include texts in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Sanskrit, and other languages, are dozens of literary works in Dakhni. Along with Persian, Dakhni was a major literary language of the Deccan Sultanates, the kingdoms that ruled the area surrounding today’s Hyderabad from the fourteenth to the late seventeenth century. Those who recognize the name Dakhni may know it as a language spoken in Hyderabad and its surroundings today. Sometimes called Dakhni Urdu, Hyderabadi,…

The Kilakarai Juma Masjid is the crowning jewel of this ancient town, not only for its history but also for its unique architectural heritage. Employing the regional Dravidian architectural style reserved for ancient South Indian temples, the builders of the mosque have left a magnificent testimony to the true harmony of faiths and cultures.
