    19 injured in Bagmati Express accident; Probe launched by Southern Railway

    Four passengers are reported to be in serious condition. Southern Railway has launched a high-level probe into the accident. The Bagmati Express, traveling from Mysuru to Darbhanga, collided with a stationary goods train at 8:30 PM on Friday. Chennai: As many as 19 passengers of the Bagmati Express (Train No. 12578), which derailed at Kavaraipettai on the night of October 11, have been admitted to hospital. The condition of four passengers is reported to be serious. Southern Railway has already launched a high-level probe into the accident. It may be recalled that the Bagmati Express, running from Mysuru to Darbhanga in Bihar, collided with a stationary goods train at 8:30 PM on Friday. The impact caused 12 coaches of the Bagmati Express to derail, and a parcel van of the train caught fire, which was later extinguished by fire and rescue services.       Menopause drug can fight malaria, CCMB study reveals

      Hyderabad: A drug widely used for the treatment of post-menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis among women now has the potential to treat malaria. In a ground-breaking study, researchers from Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) have demonstrated that Bazedoxifene is anti-parasitic and inhibits Plasmodium falciparum, the unicellular protozoan parasite that causes malaria in humans. The researchers, led by senior principal scientist Dr Puran Singh Sijwali, have shown in the study that Bazedoxifene has ‘potent inhibitory activity against both susceptible and drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum’. Since Bazedoxifene is already in clinical use for the treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis, the findings by the CCMB researchers have supported the need to repurpose the drug as an anti-malarial.
