Hungary signs new energy deals with Russia amid war in Ukraine

Hungary has signed new agreements to ensure its continued access to Russian energy – a sign of the country’s continuing diplomatic and trade ties with Moscow which have confounded some European leaders amid the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a news briefing in Moscow, Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said Russian state energy company Gazprom has agreed to allow Hungary, if needed, to import quantities of natural gas beyond the amounts agreed to in a long-term contract that was amended last year. The price of the gas, which would reach Hungary through the Turkstream pipeline, would be capped at 150 euros (£131.80) per cubic meter, Mr Szijjarto said, part of an agreement that will allow Hungary to pay down gas…

Channel route ‘open to anyone’ as ’19 suspected terrorists’ enter UK in a year

The Home Office has been blasted for leaving its boat route “open to anyone” after 19 suspected terrorists reportedly arrived in the UK via small boats in the last year. Security sources revealed the startling information to MailOnline, claiming that foreign nationals linked with groups including the so-called Islamic State were among those travelling to Britain from Northern France last year. The publication claimed most of the terrorists who landed had since lodged asylum claims and cannot be deported due to human rights laws, with all 19 allegedly kept in taxpayer-funded hotels. The sources also claimed that seven were already under “active investigation” in other countries when they arrived here, with some still under surveillance. Craig Mackinlay, the Tory MP for South Thanet,…

Kuwaiti MPs attend a parliamentary session in Kuwait City [File: Yasser Al-Zayyat] Kuwait City, Kuwait – Yet another new government in Kuwait – the country’s seventh in three years. On Sunday, in an effort to alleviate seemingly continuous political deadlock, a royal decree appointed a new Kuwaiti government, headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. Last June, a previous Kuwaiti royal decree dissolved the country’s parliament and called for new elections, with the aim of ushering in a “new era” in the Gulf country as it contended with political instability. However, last month – and after prolonged friction between the government and…

What does the ‘status quo’ mean at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque?

The status quo of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is the reason why a single police raid can precipitate an all-out war. Far-right Jewish Israelis enter Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Palestinians fear that they are losing control of the site The legal status of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, is a recurring flashpoint in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Last week, Israeli police raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque, attacking and arresting Palestinian worshippers who had been inside the prayer hall. Rockets were shot into Israel from Gaza and Lebanon in retaliation, leading to a brief flare-up in violence. In 2021, a similar raid led to an 11-day Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip. To understand how a single police raid can precipitate a…
