This week, we are joined by Bruno Lété, a security and defence specialist with The German Marshall Fund; Tomi Huhtanen, the executive director of The Wilfried Martens Centre; and Teri Schultz, a reporter specialised in NATO and Finnish affairs.  Panellists picked apart the big headlines of the week from Finland joining the NATO alliance to the EU Commission president and the French president’s trip to China. Ursula von der Leyen and Emmanuel Macron were in Beijing trying to dissuade Xi Jinping from getting any closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Emmanuel Macron says Europe must not be ‘follower’ of US, China on Taiwan

Europe must not be a “follower” of either the US or China on Taiwan, said French President Emmanuel Macron in an interview published on Sunday. He added that the bloc risks entanglement in “crises that aren’t ours”. Macron’s comments risk riling Washington and highlight divisions in the European Union over how to approach China, as the US steps up confrontation with its closest rival and Beijing draws closer to Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, AFP reported. “The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must be followers and adapt ourselves to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction,” Macron said. Citing his prized ideal of EU “strategic autonomy”, the French leader said that “we…

Trump asks aides to hire Laura Loomer, an anti-Muslim, for campaign role

Former US president Donald Trump, who is eyeing 2024 presidential elections, recently instructed his aides to employ Laura Loomer, an anti-Muslim activist, for a campaign position, reported New York Times citing four sources familiar with the plans. With a history of espousing racist views, Loomer, a far-right, is known for her controversial statements. She has made anti-Muslim rhetoric and held protests against social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook for banning her accounts for spreading hate speech and conspiracy theories.  Loomer went to Trump’s resort home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday following his arraignment in Manhattan. Given her history of outbursts and her support of the Republican Party’s fringes, some of Trump’s advisers are reportedly worried of such…

Surge in Hindu vigilante mobs who ‘attack and kill’ beef-eating Muslims

India is seeing a surge in Hindu vigilante groups violently targeting Muslims for eating beef, with one leader vowing to protect cows “as if they are our daughters and mothers”. The slaughter of the bovine animals – which are considered holy in Hinduism – is already banned in 20 out of India’s 28 states, and police can make an arrest without a warrant. Most of the states ruled by India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have established vigilante squads made up of government officials and private citizens to implement the ban. But thousands of informal groups are thought to have sprung up across northern India recently, emboldened by the increasingly anti-Muslim rhetoric of the ruling BJP ahead of elections next year. There are estimated to…
