      OPINION

Kishwar Desai | Kings German trip apt; as Covid tally climbing, boosters awaited The Easter break means school holidays — which means getting away with or without kids! And now this also means 14-hour car pile ups at the borders at Dover. Oh well, Brexit would have only made this worse, but then who are we to say anything? I am more and more keen on staycations — as even air travel has become a nightmare. Whether it is the high price of tickets, or unbearable queues at the security desks, it might just be time to take walks along the Thames and get a deck chair on South Bank for sunny days, and pretend one is at the Riviera…

Pakistan ‘slipping into authoritarianism’ as fears of political violence grow

A Pakistani political activist says he fears that his country is “slipping towards authoritarianism” and that civil unrest will continue to grow in the wake of the government’s confrontation with Imran Khan. Mr Khan, a famous former international cricketer turned politician, is the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI). He served as Prime Minister of his country from August 2018 until April of last year, when he was removed from office, after his government lost a vote of no confidence over its handling of the economy. Pakistan has since been ruled by a coalition government made up of the other two main political parties in the country – the Pakistan Muslim League (PLM) and the Pakistan Peoples Party. The government has…

French minister to appear on Playboy front cover

Marlene Schiappa, who is minister for social economy and associations in Emmanuel Macron’s government, will feature fully clothed alongside a 12-page interview in the French edition of the magazine. Her decision to appear on the cover has been criticised by fellow politicians who are currently facing a huge backlash over Mr Macron’s pension reforms. The increase in state pension age from 62 to 64 has triggered the worst strikes and violent protests France has seen in years. Green MP Sandrine Rousseau told TV channel BFM: “Where is the respect for the French people? “People who are going to have to work for two years more, who are demonstrating, who are losing days of salary, who aren’t managing to eat because of inflation. Ms Schiappa…

Scott Richards from the Presidium Network non-profit organisation, which is assisting Mr Cornwell and the unnamed Briton, told Sky News: “We’re very pleased to announce that there has been contact between families and the detainees. “They were able to spend about 10 minutes this morning in an unscripted conversation,…

Suella Braverman admits she didn’t know Rwandan police killed refugees in 2018

Suella Braverman has claimed she is ‘not familiar’ with the widely publicised killing of at least a dozen refugees by Rwandan police five years ago. The home secretary appeared to draw a blank when challenged over the incident on Sunday in light of the government’s plans to deport migrants arriving in the UK on small boats to Rwanda. The UN says local officers responding to protests over food rations outside one of its key Rwandan aid centres in 2018 opened fire, killing eight people who had fled ethnic persecution and war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Another three were said to have been killed by police guarding a nearby refugee camp after news of the deaths ignited tensions. It…
