Air India chief defends paying Kremlin millions to keep flying over Russia

Air India has defended paying the Kremlin millions to fly over Russian airspace as it prepares to ramp up its UK operations. Despite the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine, Campbell Wilson, chief executive, said Air India was open to flying over Russia to UK and US destinations “if that’s the way the winds are blowing and it is most economical”. Doing so could lead to millions of pounds being handed to the Kremlin in so-called overflight charges. Prior to the pandemic, Russia generated $1.7bn (£1.3bn) from overflight charges each year. Mr Wilson told the Telegraph: “You guys [the UK] are buying gas. You guys are buying oil. How much investment from the Russian diaspora do you have in Kensington and other places? “The…

Pirates attack and board Danish ship in Gulf of Guinea as all communications lost

A Danish-owned ship has been stormed by pirates, with all communications lost as the attack plays out more than 150 miles off Africa’s west coast. All 16 crew members have sought refuge in a safe room onboard the oil and chemicals tanker, shipping firm Monjasa said on Tuesday. The 135-metre long Monjasa Reformer had been sitting idle on Saturday in the Gulf of Guinea – roughly 160 miles west of the Republic of Congo’s Port Pointe-Noire – when it was attacked and boarded by the pirates, the company said. The ship’s operator, a Dubai-based firm called Montec Ship Management, has reported the attack to a maritime cooperation centre run by the British and French navies, which seeks to maintain safety in the Gulf…

Israel’s identity crisis goes far beyond Netanyahu’s plans for the judiciary – clashes will keep happening

The political chaos that has engulfed Israel goes well beyond a bitter battle over controversial plans to potentially defang the country’s judiciary and the mass protests the proposals have sparked. The root cause sits at the volcanic core of the country. It is the reason why there have been five elections in less than four years, and why some argue there may be a sixth on the horizon. Israel is bitterly – maybe even irreparably – divided. And that identity crisis is coming to a head. And at least for now, there does not seem to be any way to marry what are vastly – existentially – different visions of how the state should run into something workable On Monday, after tens…

Anti-government rioters brought “fire and blood” to the streets of France on Tuesday – days after a state visit by King Charles was cancelled because of the violence. Up to a million people joined marches against President Emmanuel Macron raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 without a parliamentary vote. Ones in cities including Paris and Nantes erupted into violence with gangs involved in running battles with the police. “Radicalised elements from the Left and the Ultra-Left want to hijack the trade union processions,” said Gerald Darmanin, France’s Interior Minister. “Their aim is to bring fire and blood to France,” he added, saying that 13,000 police and gendarmes were mobilised, including 5,500 in Paris alone. They were supported by…

US Senate votes to advance repeal of Iraq War authorisation

The final vote to end two Iraq war authorisations clears a key procedural hurdle, as the Senate decides to limit debate. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer enters the Capitol as the chamber weighs a repeal of two decades-old military force authorisations in Iraq [J Scott Applewhite] The United States Senate has backed a measure expected to clear the way for a vote to repeal two authorisations for war in Iraq. On Monday, the chamber voted 65 to 28 to limit debate over whether to end two “Authorizations for Use of Military Force” (AUMFs) — one from 1991 that coincided with the Gulf War and a second from 2002, approved in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq invasion. Israel protesters vow to continue until judicial ‘reform’ gone

Protesters spent all day on the streets on Monday, demanding change [Azucena Mezona] West Jerusalem – As Israelis wake up after a tumultuous night of protests and an evening speech by the prime minister, many of them are adamant that the protests will continue until they achieve their demands. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday night a pause on his controversial judicial reforms to “allow dialogue” and avoid a “civil war” – succumbing to growing pressure from within his own coalition a day after one of the biggest protests in Israel’s history.
