Taliban health ministry launches annual polio vaccination drive

The Taliban health ministry announced on Monday (March 13) that the annual polio inoculation campaign will be launched in Afghanistan. The news agencies reported that the vaccination programme aims at reaching at least nine million children. It will be the second year in a row the vaccination drive has taken place under Taliban rule.  The World Health Organization (WHO) mentioned in a report last year in August that the polio eradication programme in Afghanistan has made critical gains after the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in 2021, but the job is far from finished.  Polio is caused by a virus that majorly affects nerves in the spinal cord or brain stem. Polio can lead to the affected person being unable to…

Saudi Arabia spends £30bn on Boeing jets in race to dominate Gulf travel

Saudi Arabia is to spend £30bn on a fleet of 72 Boeing jets as it seeks to dominate the Gulf with a new airline. Special relationship becomes personal as Sunak and Biden bond in San Diego

It is common for British and American leaders to try to show the “special relationship” between their two countries extends to them personally. When Rishi Sunak landed in San Diego for a flash visit to see Joe Biden, the world’s media were spared any such attempts verging on the grandiose. There was some light banter from Biden about Sunak’s home in California and carefully coordinated invites between the two leaders for future visits. It was a far cry from the scenes of David Cameron playing table tennis with Barack Obama, or Theresa May holding hands with Donald Trump. But when journalists were ushered out of the gym on the naval base in Point Loma, where the leaders of the three…

UK gives India £2.3bn in aid despite pledge to stop handouts

Britain has sent £2.3 billion in aid to India since 2016, despite ministers having given the impression that the country would receive no more money, a report reveals. The Government’s aid watchdog, the Independent Commission on Aid Impact (ICAI), said many people “would be surprised” to see money continuing to go to India at this level. They said the huge amounts still going to India were poorly targeted, with not enough going towards priorities such as poverty reduction and human rights. In one example of waste, millions were given to an Indian bank to loan to the poorest – but instead, the bank spent the money on business loans and providing the wealthy with credit cards. ICAI gave the UK’s India…

Amir Khan: Armed robbery terror was scarier than any of my fights

The prizefighter, 36, was enjoying an evening out with wife, Faryal Makhdoom, 31, when he was targeted as they left the Sahara Grill Restaurant in Leyton, east London, on April 18 last year. Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how he was forced to hand over his bespoke, rose gold, diamond-encrusted Franck Muller watch, a gift following a boxing match, by gun-toting Dante Campbell, 20. Mr Khan, who was a unified world champion at light welterweight, said the robber pointed a gun in his face and said: “Take off the watch.” The…

The human rights group, in a new report published on Tuesday, said a global Torture-Free Trade treaty was needed to regulate the trade in policing equipment, including kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs) such as rubber-coated metal bullets, and to help protect the right to protest.…
