Schools and firms across Philippines shut as jeepney drivers start strike

Aweek-long strike by drivers of Philippine jeepneys began on Monday, prompting schools and universities across major cities to suspend in-person classes, while businesses have also been urged to work from home. The local authorities in Manila, Quezon City, Marikina, Muntinlupa and Pasig City in the national capital region told schools to switch to distance learning classes due to disruption caused by the strike. The local government of Quezon City, the most populous city in the Philippines, also called on businesses to work online. Jeepneys, dubbed “the king of the road”, are a crucial part of the transport system in the Philippines, offering rides that are cheaper than trains, taxis or motorised tricycles. The vehicles – which were originally adapted from…

Fury in Germany as Hamburg shooting brings ‘lax’ gun laws into focus

Gun laws in Germany, where weapon ownership is among the highest in Europe, could be further tightened after last week’s mass shooting in which seven people, including an unborn child, were killed in a Jehovah’s Witness hall in Hamburg. The attack has thrown up the perennial question of whether the various parts of the country’s federal system are working together, and strengthened the hand of those in the governing coalition who are seeking stronger gun controls. Hamburg authorities have highlighted the speed of the police response: a specialist unit arrived within minutes of the first bullets being fired by 35-year-old Philipp Fusz. Since 2021, the city has been piloting a specialist unit modelled on a taskforce formed in Vienna after four people died…

Pakistan’s foreign minister stutters after calling India ‘friend’

Pakistan’s foreign minister struggled briefly to define his country’s relationship with India at a news conference on Friday. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari settled for “neighbouring countries” after using the word “friends” during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York. Mr Zardari was talking about the long-gestating Kashmir issue on the sidelines of the Commission on the Status of Women when he found himself in a spot. He was asked a question comparing the Palestinian conflict with the situation between India and Pakistan – both nuclear-armed countries and long-time rivals who claim the Kashmir region as their own. He said Pakistan faces an “uphill task” in getting the UN to focus its attention on Kashmir. “And whenever the issue of Kashmir is brought up, our friends within, with… our…

‘We’re being taken for suckers’: Tory anger at Rishi Sunak’s £480m migrant deal with the French

Conservative MPs have questioned the decision to send France nearly half a billion pounds to help the country stop asylum seekers ahead of a Budget which is set to see the financial squeeze on Britain continue for another year. Rishi Sunak insists the deal, which includes a new detention centre in France for migrants caught trying to get to Britain in dangerous small boats, would help cut the number of crossings and prove a “sensible investment”. Mr Sunak visited Paris on Friday for the first Franco-British Summit in five years, talking to Mr Macron one-on-one for more than an hour as the two leaders finalised a string of announcements, including enhanced co-operation on the Channel boats crisis. They revealed Britain would pay €541m…

Israelis protest proposed legal changes for 10th week

Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated Saturday against a contentious plan to overhaul the judiciary as the government pressed ahead with the plan. The nationwide demonstrations have been a regular weekly event for more than two months. Despite the demonstrations, Netanyahu and his allies have pledged to press ahead with a series of bills that would strip the Supreme Court of its ability to review legislation and give coalition politicians control over judicial appointments. Critics say the changes will destroy the country’s system of checks and balances and concentrate power in the hands of the prime minister and his allies. “We are protesting because if not, it’s like compliance and we will never agree to have democracy abolished in this country,” said Einat Gival-Levi,…
