Question on Chinese election interference is racist, Justin Trudeau suggests

Justin Trudeau has suggested that questions about Chinese interference in Canadian elections are racist, as he refused to give straight answers during a tense press conference. The Liberal Prime Minister has been under pressure to explain whether Canadian security services warned his office that they had concerns that Han Dong, an MP in his own party, had received support from the Chinese consulate in Toronto. But instead of giving a straight answer about Mr Han and potential foreign influence, Mr Trudeau said: “One of the things we’ve seen, unfortunately, over the past years is a rise in anti-Asian racism linked to the pandemic and concerns being raised or arisen around people’s loyalties.” Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper earlier this month reported, citing…

Vladimir Putin’s £274 million spy plane ‘destroyed by drones’ at Russian air base in Belarus

Belarusian anti-government activists on Sunday claimed they had blown up a sophisticated Russian military surveillance aircraft in a drone attack at an airfield near Minsk. Aliaksandr Azarov, leader of Belarusian anti-government organisation BYPOL, was quoted as saying that Belarusian “partisans” had used drones to carry out the attack on a Russian Beriev A-50 spy plane, which is thought to be worth £274million. The plane, which carries the NATO reporting name ‘Mainstay’, is an airborne early warning aircraft with command and control capabilities and the ability to track up to 60 targets at a time. “They were drones (that carried out the attack). The participants of the operation are Belarusians,” Mr Azarov was quoted as saying on the organisation’s Telegram messaging app and on Poland-based Belsat…

The 46-year-old, power-obsessed despot has declared the medal is intended to be given to soldiers who “distinguished themselves” in Putin’s war in Ukraine and for particular “heroic deeds”. His own precise “heroic deed” is still a secret. The honour comes amid rumours that the cruel warlord who Putin promoted to Colonel-General in the Russian national guard during the conflict, has been spending time in his estate in Dubai and the Maldives recently while his…

Endangered Mexican wolf population makes strides in US

Endangered Mexican gray wolves are making more strides, as more breeding pairs and pups have been documented since reintroduction efforts began in the southwestern U.S. more than two decades ago, federal wildlife managers said Tuesday. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released the results of its annual survey in New Mexico and Arizona, saying this is the first time the population has topped 200 and the seventh straight year that the numbers have trended upward. In all, at least 241 of the predators were counted, marking a nearly 23% increase over the previous year and a doubling of the population since 2017. HRW calls on Tunisia’s president to halt crackdown on judiciary

Human Rights Watch says Kais Saied’s government has taken away the independence of the judiciary, as arrests of opponents continue. Tunisian President Kais Saied has been accused of orchestrating a ‘power grab’ [File: Hassene Dridi/] Tunisia must reinstate all judges and prosecutors arbitrarily dismissed by President Kais Saied, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said, with the rights group adding that all measures taken to “crush judicial independence” should be reversed. The watchdog’s latest report, published on Monday, came after the Justice Ministry appointed by Saied refused to reinstate 49 magistrates, despite an administrative court order to do so. “These blows to judicial independence reflect the government’s determination to subjugate prosecutors and judges to the executive branch, at the expense of Tunisians’…

Why money will not be enough to address Japan’s baby crisis

Japanese women are having children later in life worried that motherhood will end their careers. Today’s Japanese women have more opportunities for education and career advancement then generations before them [File: Eugene Hoshiko/ Photo] Tokyo, Japan – Chika Hashimoto, a 23-year-old who recently graduated from Tokyo’s Temple University, is not averse to having a family in the future, but nor is she jumping at the opportunity. “It is definitely not my first choice,” she told Al Jazeera. “Fulfilling my career and enjoying my freedom is far more important than getting married and having children.” Hashimoto cites economic concerns as the primary reason why she, and many other young Japanese women, are reevaluating a future centred around family life. “Raising a child…
