Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Monday’s twin temblors the “biggest disaster” since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake, which killed about 33,000 people. The first magnitude 7.7 quake, centred in Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, brought down whole apartment blocks in several cities and piled more devastation on millions of Syrians displaced by years of war. Freezing winter weather added to the plight of the many thousands injured or left homeless…

Turkish authorities have requested emergency assistance from NATO allies on Monday in response to the strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the south of the country that has left more than 1,500 people dead in Turkey and Syria. The Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Center (EADRCC) has confirmed Turkey’s request, asking the other allies for emergency medical equipment, as well as rescue and search for survivors teams and field hospitals for extreme weather conditions. El Salvador opens America’s largest prison, claims it’s ‘impossible to escape’ from

Known for being the most dangerous country, the crime rate in El Salvador continues to remain a matter of concern for the local police and the government. While the country has witnessed a big surge in crimes, especially murders, in the last two decades, there has now been an evident reduction in homicide rates, thanks to the government’s recent crackdown. As a part of this, the country has now opened what it claims to be America’s largest prison. The prison was recently unveiled by the country’s president Nayib Bukele who went on to describe it as “a fundamental piece to completely win the war against gangs.” Notably, the prison has been built to support the country’s already overwhelmed prison system…

Catholic church unveils Black Mary and Jesus posters in anti-racism drive

The Catholic church has unveiled posters depicting Mary and Jesus as different ethnicities as part of an anti-racism drive launched in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. The images, showing the Biblical figures as Black, Asian and Middle Eastern, are to reflect the “rich diversity” of the church community. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales released the artwork as part of its newly launched Racial Justice Sunday event, created after Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in 2020. Father Mark Odion, a member of the teering group, told The Independent: “Depictions of the Holy Family have often reflected the culture in which they were created. It is important that we recognise the rich diversity of the Catholic community, not only in England and Wales, but throughout the…

The founder of Russia’s notorious Wagner mercenary group challenged Volodymyr Zelensky to a dogfight on Monday for the control of Bakhmut, as Ukraine braced for a renewed Russian offensive. Yevgeny Prigozhin threw down the gauntlet to the Ukrainian leader in a bizarre video from the cockpit of an SU-24 fighter-bomber, claiming he had just flown a night sortie over the town in the eastern Donbas region. “Volodymyr Oleksandrovych [Zelensky], we have landed. We have bombed Bakhmut,” he said. “I will fly a MiG-29. If you so desire, let’s meet in the skies. If you win, you take Artemivsk (Bakhmut’s Soviet-era name). If not, we advance till (the River) Dnipro.” The battle of Bakhmut is fast approaching a tipping point, with Russia throwing fresh…
