Sadiq Khan threatens to install ULEZ cameras against councils’ will

Councils fighting to stop the expansion of London’s ultra-low emissions zone (Ulez) face having enforcement cameras mounted onto traffic lights against their will. Transport for London (TfL) revealed it does not need permission to install the majority of CCTV cameras in the capital’s outer boroughs. It means that despite the threat from several councils to block the cameras from being used within their boroughs, Sadiq Khan can push ahead with the controversial plans to expand the zone.  TfL has confirmed to The Telegraph that it will install two-thirds of the 2,750 cameras needed to identify Ulez offenders onto existing TfL signage and infrastructure, meaning that it does not require local authority permission. The revelation came as several outer London boroughs have voiced public opposition to…

Pakistan further tightens blasphemy laws that already spell death penalty for insulting prophet

Pakistan has further tightened its strict blasphemy laws by extending the punishment to those who are convicted for insulting religious figures connected to prophet Muhammad. The Pakistan National Assembly unanimously passed the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill which will not only widen the ambit of the law, but increase punishment and fines for those convicted under it. The move has raised concerns among human rights activists and observers who say it will increase the prospect of persecution for some, especially religious minorities like Hindus and Christians. In Pakistan, an insult to the prophet Muhammad or Islam carries a potential death sentence. The laws have also been used to persecute and target minority faiths and sections in the Muslim-majority country. Under the law, those convicted…

On Roe anniversary, US VP says no freedom without abortion rights

Nationwide marches mark Roe v Wade’s anniversary, the first since the Supreme Court struck down US federal abortion protections. Vice President Kamala Harris has warned that abortion rights are under attack across the United States in a speech to mark the 50th anniversary of the Roe v Wade ruling. Harris said the now-defunct Supreme Court ruling, which codified federal abortion protections but was struck down by conservative justices last year, had enshrined the “fundamental constitutional right of a woman to make decisions of her own body, not the government”. “America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. But let us ask: Can we truly be free if a woman cannot make decisions about her own body?” the…
