      FBI searches Trump’s Florida home

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has said that his home in Florida has been “raided” by the FBI. “My beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” Trump added on Monday in a statement released through his political action committee — ‘Save America’. The former President was not present at his home at the time of raids. However, neither the FBI nor the US Justice Department have made any comments on the raids at Trump’s house. The search — as approved by the judge and different from the politically loaded term “raid” — was unprecedented and this was the first time a former US President’s home was…

India-Pakistan ‘backchannel’ talks hit a dead end: Report

Islamabad: Backchannel talks between Pakistan and India have met a dead end as both sides have struggled to agree on the moves that may pave the way for slow but gradual improvement in the relationship, a media report said citing an informed source. “Talks have been going on but have reached a point where things aren’t moving anywhere,” The Express Tribune report quoted the source as saying. There has been a desire from both sides to break the impasse but the issue is how to move forward from this point onwards, the source explained. What has slowed down the process was the political uncertainty in Pakistan, The Express Tribune reported. There was a glimmer of hope for a possible thaw in…

9 people injured in Cincinnati shooting

Washington: A shooting in the US city of Cincinnati has left at least nine people wounded, police said. The suspected shooter fled the scene after opening fire in a crowded area on the city’s Main Street and remains at large, dpa news agency quoted the Cincinnati Police Department Assistant Chief Mike John as saying at a news conference on Sunday. “Right now, we have one Cincinnati Police officer that discharged one round, and we do not know if that officer struck the individual that he was firing the gun at,” John said. “What I can tell you is the individual that he fired at was actively shooting the firearm at that time.” None of the victims are in critical condition, with…

Tokyo: Japan on Saturday marked the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima that took place in the final days of the Second World War. A moment of silence was observed at 8.15 a.m., the exact moment when a uranium bomb dropped from a US bomber detonated over the city on August 6, 1945, killing around 140,000 people by the end of the year and exposed many more to harmful radiation, reports Xinhua news agency. At a memorial ceremony held at the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui cautioned in the Peace Declaration that dependence on nuclear deterrence is gaining momentum in the world. “We must immediately render all nuclear buttons meaningless,” he said. Also in attendance at the…

McDonald’s worker shot in spat over cold french fries dies

New York: A McDonald’s worker in New York’s Brooklyn who was shot point-blank in a spat over cold french fries has died, police said. Following the Monday night shooting, Matthew Webb, 23, had been on life support at Brookdale Hospital and died on Friday, reports dpa news agency citing the police as saying. The suspect, Michael Morgan, 20, accused of shooting the fast-food worker in the face because he was mad about how the restaurant handled his mother’s fry order, is expected to be charged with murder. “The people are anticipating homicide charges in this case, given the victim is currently on life support,” Assistant District Attorney Luis Paternina said at Morgan’s Thursday arraignment, apparently unaware Webb had already died. “So,…

UK: ‘Early signs’ that monkeypox outbreak may be peaking

\London: British health authorities said Friday the monkeypox outbreak across the country may be peaking and that the epidemic’s growth rate has slowed. The U.K.’s Health Security Agency said in a statement there were “early signs that the outbreak is plateauing,” with 2,859 cases detected since May. No deaths have been reported. Last month, authorities estimated the outbreak was doubling in size about every two weeks, but the number of new infections has dropped in recent weeks. “While the most recent data suggest the growth of the outbreak has slowed, we cannot be complacent,” said Dr Meera Chand, Director of Clinical and Emerging Infections at the Health Security Agency. She said anyone who thought they might have monkeypox should skip meeting…

In a countersuit against the micro-blogging platform filed in a Delaware court in the US late on Friday, Musk said he was “hoodwinked” into signing the $44 billion Twitter takeover deal. “In July, Twitter sued the Indian government to challenge orders requiring it to remove content and block dozens of accounts,” tweeted New York Times reporter Kate Conger. “Musk takes issue with that, saying it jeopardizes one of Twitter’s largest markets and suggesting Twitter should follow local law in India,” Conger added. Twitter last moved the Karnataka High Court against the Indian…
