    Opinion: Falsehood trumps limping truth

Monopolisation of social media and other digital platforms is empowering right-wing forces to control the world Propaganda, misinformation and fake news are nothing new in our society. It can be traced back to the time of Mahabharata when Yudhisthir, known for his unwavering truthfulness, misled Drona by declaring that Ashwathama was killed but murmured the latter part, “I do not know if it is a man or an elephant,” so softly that Drona could not hear it clearly. Believing Yudhisthir that his warrior son Ashwathama was killed, Drona bowed his head and was beheaded. Drona was one of the epical victims of fake news or disinformation. Propaganda and misinformation have taken a new turn now with the widespread availability of sophisticated methods of information and communication technology. The sharing of text, images, videos or links online often allows information to go viral within no time. Merriam-Webster defines misinformation as false…

It felt very close, but the sound made me realise it was the “good” bang of air defence systems hitting drones or missiles midair. At least 10 more bangs followed within a couple of minutes, with bright spots of air defence rockets…

Sunak and Zelensky’s bromance shows Boris Johnson’s ‘special relationship’ was not that special

Boris Johnson liked to think that he had a special relationship with Volodymyr Zelensky, his fellow showman turned statesman. But while the two undeniably got on well during Mr Johnson’s time in office, Rishi Sunak has struck up a bromance of his own with the Ukrainian leader. That is partly due to Mr Zelensky’s own political brilliance, his ability to convince those whose support he needs the most that he has a unique bond with them. But it is also due to the iron commitment within all wings of British politics to continue backing Ukraine with warm words, weaponry and cold, hard cash. Mr Sunak and Mr Zelensky bonded at Chequers on Monday, taking a stroll through the gardens of the Prime Minister’s country…

Mr Erdogan led the first round with 49.51% of the vote, its chairman said. Although he had a clear lead over his main challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who polled 44.88%, he needed more than half the vote to win the race outright. A second round will go ahead on 28 May, with Mr Erdogan the clear favourite. Shortly before the announcement by election council leader Ahmet Yener, the president’s rival appealed to supporters not to “fall into despair” and to stand and take on the election together. But it was not immediately obvious how the opposition…
