    Opinion: Falsehood trumps limping truth

Monopolisation of social media and other digital platforms is empowering right-wing forces to control the world Propaganda, misinformation and fake news are nothing new in our society. It can be traced back to the time of Mahabharata when Yudhisthir, known for his unwavering truthfulness, misled Drona by declaring that Ashwathama was killed but murmured the latter part, “I do not know if it is a man or an elephant,” so softly that Drona could not hear it clearly. Believing Yudhisthir that his warrior son Ashwathama was killed, Drona bowed his head and was beheaded. Drona was one of the epical victims of fake news or disinformation. Propaganda and misinformation have taken a new turn now with the widespread availability of sophisticated methods of information and communication technology. The sharing of text, images, videos or links online often allows information to go viral within no time. Merriam-Webster defines misinformation as false…

Student groups attribute trend to limited job prospects, safety concerns following recent anti-immigration riots in some cities London: Indian students are being put off applying to UK universities, adding to their financial woes at a time when education institutions are already coping with constrained budgets, a new report into the stability of the higher education sector in England has revealed. Based on UK Home Office data on confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) by UK providers from 2022-23 to 2023-24, an Office for Students (OfS) analysis shows a 20.4 per cent drop in Indian student numbers — down from 139,914 to 111,329. Indian student groups in the UK said the fall was to be expected amid limited job prospects and safety concerns following recent anti-immigration riots in some cities. “There has been a considerable decline in student visa applications from prospective non-UK students in some major source countries,” notes the report by OfS, a non-departmental…

Erdogan faces defeat after 20 years dismantling Turkey’s democracy – but don’t expect him to go quietly

Beware writing off an authoritarian leader as wily and ruthless as Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who as kingmaker, premier and finally president, has dominated and gradually defiled Turkish democracy over two decades. But by putting aside their differences and uniting behind one man, Turkey’s opposition parties are on the verge of finally removing Erdogan from power; something that promises to reverse a period of horrific rights abuses – and enable Turkey, a country with a unique role as a nexus between East and West, to reset its ties with Europe and the US. The latest polls suggest that the broad, six-party coalition, headed by the bespectacled, mild-mannered 74-year-old Kemal Kilicdaroglu – dubbed Turkey’s Gandhi – is tantalisingly close to obtaining a majority of the…

Israel uses ‘David’s Sling’ defence system to shoot down rockets from Gaza for first time

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired rockets at Jerusalem and Israeli settlements in the West Bank on Thursday, as Israel relied on its new “David’s Sling” air defence system to intercept fire. As the fighting between Islamic Jihad in Gaza and Israel entered its fourth day, Gaza militants launched a barrage of rockets towards the holy city, triggering air raid sirens on the outskirts. Some missiles also triggered air raid alerts in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, where footage showed people taking cover on roads. Two rockets launched at Jerusalem were intercepted by Israel’s medium-range David’s Sling which had also successfully intercepted a rocket for the first time the previous day. Though introduced in Israel in 2017, the system has…

Rishi Sunak ridiculed by senior Tory for ‘serving tea to Jill Biden’ as economic pledges fail

Rishi Sunak is under pressure from inside the Conservative Party over his ability to deliver his five pledges after his Chancellor admitted the target to halve inflation might not be met. Nervousness over the UK’s economic outlook was heightened when the latest GDP figures published on Friday showed weak growth for the first three months of 2023, held back by strikes and the cost of living crisis. Senior Tories urged the Prime Minister to get a grip on his government’s key agenda rather than “serving tea to Jill Biden” – in reference to Mr Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty hosting the US first lady at Downing Street over the coronation weekend. Conservative insiders are also concerned that Jeremy Hunt is taking a too-cautious approach to the economy and does not…

Judge who presided over Parkland school shooting trial steps down

The Florida judge who presided over the Parkland mass shooting trial has announced that she will be resigning from the bench next month. Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer became a national figure when she oversaw the murder trial of Nikolas Cruz last year. Cruz received a life sentence after a jury was unable to unanimously agree on giving him the death sentence for the 2018 murder of 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. After she sentenced Cruz, 24, to life without parole she notably left the bench to hug members of the prosecution and victims’ families. That action resulted in the Florida Supreme Court removing her from overseeing post-conviction motions in the case of Randy Tundidor. He is facing the death penalty for…

An explosive device hidden in a bin injured a Russian official in the occupied city of Melitopol, the latest in a campaign of behind-enemy-lines assassination attempts. Vladimir Rogov, Moscow-appointed head for the Zaporizhzhia region said an unidentified attacker planted a bomb in a rubbish bin by a block of flats in Melitopol. The bomb reportedly went off when the official who was not named left the house. The man identified as a deputy minister of Zaporizhzhia for construction and utilities has been taken to hospital with severe injuries, Mr Rogov said. By Zaheena Rasheed, Nu Nu Lusan and Mustafa Elnemr The villagers of Kone Ywar in central Myanmar had two hours to flee. It was February 28. Columns of soldiers were approaching the village along its main roads to the north and west. There was only one way out – a dirt path to the east with a small bridge over the Yama stream. The bridge could only take motorbikes, no cars or bullock carts. “There were about 1,000 of us. And only one exit for everyone,” said Kyaw Hsan Oo, a resident of Kone Ywar. “It was terrifying, difficult and chaotic.” Shortly after the soldiers marched into Kone Ywar, the residents of the farming village watched in despair from afar as huge clouds of…
