Emiliano Martinez faces awkward World Cup reunion after brutally mocking Kylian Mbappe

Emiliano Martinez will line up against his opposite number from the World Cup final, Hugo Lloris, as Aston Villa travel to Tottenham on Sunday. The Argentina goalkeeper, 30, has arrived back in the United Kingdom and is due to return to Villa’s training ground on Thursday after extended celebrations in his homeland. Martinez played a vital role as Lionel Messi and Co. defeated Lloris’ France in the World Cup final via a penalty shootout at Lusail Stadium. The former Arsenal shot-stopper proceeded to goad Kylian Mbappe – who scored a hat-trick against Argentina – in the wake of La Albiceleste’s triumph. Martinez was roundly criticised for his provocative and unnecessary actions, with Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira branding them “stupid”. The latest chapter of the saga will see Martinez and France captain Lloris go head to head once again, this time in the Premier League this weekend.…

Goalkeeper escapes punishment for throwing flare in ugly A-League pitch invasion

Melbourne City goalkeeper Tom Glover has escaped sanction for his role in the violent A-League pitch invasion earlier this month. Several people have been charged for their involvement in the fracas, which saw spectators swarm on to the pitch at AAMI stadium during the Melbourne derby on December 17, forcing the match to be abandoned. Glover was concussed and left with “severe lacerations” from the incident, after being struck in the head with a metal bucket. Football Australia hinted Glover could face punishment for throwing a flare that landed amongst a group of rival supporters, which led to the first hoards of incensed spectators leaping the fence and making a beeline towards him. But Glover has been officially exonerated of…

Cristiano Ronaldo to undergo medical to complete £173m-a-year transfer after Man Utd exit

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to undergo a medical at Al-Nassr ahead of a move that will see him earn a staggering £173million per year. The superstar attacker left Manchester United in acrimonious fashion just before the World Cup following a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan. Since that exit, Ronaldo’s options have steadily decreased, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid both ruling themselves out of signing him. One of the only offers he has received since his departure from Old Trafford has come from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. They currently sit top of the table in the Saudi Pro League, as they look to win their first title since 2019. The Knights of Najd are hopeful that signing Ronaldo can be a key step in realising those…

Lionel Messi sent 160 players Christmas gift – including 13 Premier League stars

Lionel Messi will be celebrating this Christmas having got his hands on the item he always wanted – the World Cup trophy. It is unlikely celebrations will have truly died down just a week after the Argentinian icon led his country to the ultimate international honour on a historic night at the Lusail Stadium. With the World Cup now on his CV, there is not really much that Messi could want for Christmas. But he has history of giving rather than receiving Christmas gifts – having provided his own small dose of festive cheer to various opponents in 2020. In the run-up to Christmas that year, Messi scored the 644th goal of his Barcelona career to eclipse Pele’s official Santos record –…

Argentina, poll reveals the best between Messi and Maradona

Two days after Scaloni’s Albiceleste won the title of national world champion, the Argentine newspaper ‘Olè’ launched a poll to decree who between Lionel Messi and Diego Armando Maradona is the greatest of all time, following the rainbow triumph of Paris Saint-Germain’s number 30, who was also decisive in the final with a double. The poll has not yet closed but after 125 thousand votes from Argentine fans, the result now seems a foregone conclusion: in fact, Messi received as many as 47 percent of the votes, 39 percent of the fans preferred not to expose themselves, saying that the two are on the same level, while only 14 percent preferred ‘El Pibe de Oro. The verdict could still be…
