Nishant Dev misses out on Paris Olympics quota, loses by split decision in QF

Nishant Dev missed out on a Paris Olympic quota by a whisker, suffering a heartbreaking loss in the 71kg quarterfinals as all Indian boxers returned empty-handed from the first World Olympic Boxing Qualifier here. Dev went down 1-4 to USA’s Omari Jones, the 2021 World Championship silver medallist, in a closely-contested light middleweight quarterfinal late on Monday. A win in the last eight stage would have fetched the 2023 World Championships bronze medallist an Olympic quota. None of the nine boxers competing here were able to add to India’s tally of four quotas in boxing. After two qualification events — the Asian Games and the first World Olympic Boxing Qualifier — not one Indian male pugilist has been able to book a place for the Olympics. All four quotas in boxing have come in the women’s section with two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg), and Tokyo Olympics bronze…

Tyson Fury beat Ngannou on a contentious split decision in his last fight and Shields believes Joshua could have a difficult contest too with the mixed martial artist. “I think it’s going to be a good fight. Now it’s kind of shifted on, I feel like it’ll be a split decision going either guy’s way,” Shields told Sky Sports. “I say that because it feels like AJ has a lot to prove and I feel like when he’s got a lot to prove sometimes he puts too much pressure on himself and he doesn’t fight his fight. In what is going to be a big home season as far as the red-ball cricket is concerned, England made a fantastic start as batters and bowlers both came to party and just were too strong for the young Irish team, who is still new in Test cricket at this level. However, as Ireland skipper Andy Balbirnie said, getting England to bat again was a small win after a record 163-run stand between Mark Adair and Andy McBrine for the 7th wicket. Now, early in the second half, the Manchester City midfielder set himself again on the edge of the United box, Kevin De Bruyne having pulled back a free-kick into his sphere of influence. United were level at that point thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty – following a real letter-of-the-law handball decision against Jack Grealish on the half hour. Gündogan’s opener had been with his right foot. This time, he allowed the ball to run across him before making the connection with his…

When, some 15 years ago, a 38-year-old captained his team to the title at the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) many thought the cliché was true: this was the greatest player never to have captained his country. Shane Warne may or may not have thought so, but as captain of that winning Rajasthan Royals team he played a dual role: as tactician and as father confessor. Australia didn’t see him as captaincy material, but the club did, and he repaid that faith. It is a captaincy role that Mahendra Singh Dhoni has played with equal conviction. In his 250th IPL match, the final this week, he continued to be Chennai Super Kings’ leading on-field tactician and father confessor. His knowledge…
