Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu lifted the Singapore Open Super 500 trophy after outwitting China’s Wang Zhi Yi in an intense women’s singles final, here on Sunday. Wimbledon Men’s singles final on Sunday was a star-studded event. Pictures emerging from the event that took place in London, show that some of the top Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise and Kate Winslet attended the match. Novak Djokovic underlined his recent dominance at Wimbledon with a composed and controlled fightback against Australia’s Nick Kyrgios to win a fourth consecutive men’s singles title. Serbia’s Djokovic, 35, lost the first set after some superb serving from Kyrgios, but ended up winning 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3) on Centre Court. New Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina said she “did not know” how to celebrate her “shocking” victory over Ons Jabeur in the final. Rybakina beat the Tunisian third seed 3-6 6-2 6-2 to become Kazakhstan’s first Grand Slam singles champion. The 23-year-old is known for not celebrating victories and simply raised her right arm in the air when she won. Rafael Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon before semifinal with injury
Rafael Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon a day before he was supposed to play in the semifinals because of a torn abdominal muscle. “Unfortunately, as you can imagine, if I am here, it’s because I have to pull out from the tournament,” Nadal said during a news conference at the All England Club on Thursday. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was scheduled to face Nick Kyrgios for a berth in the final on Friday. Kyrgios advanced to his first final at a major tournament. India’s Sania Mirza and her Croatian partner Mate Pavic’s dream of winning the Wimbledon mixed doubles title came to an end on Wednesday as they were defeated by defending champions Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk. Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Lucie Hradecka displayed fearless brand of tennis but much younger and superior American singles players Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula prevailed in the women’s doubles third round of the French Open, here on Tuesday.
