Microsoft to soon rebrand Office as ‘Microsoft 365’

In a bid to make a major change to its Microsoft Office branding, the tech giant will soon rename it as “Microsoft 365”, after more than 30 years. According to The Verge, Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint are still available, but Microsoft will now frequently refer to them as being a part of Microsoft 365 rather than Microsoft Office. “In the coming months, Office.com, the Office mobile app, and the Office app for Windows will become the Microsoft 365 app, with a new icon, a new look, and even more features,” Microsoft was quoted as saying. The Office app for Windows, iOS, and Android will all get a facelift in January, with the initial logo and design changes appearing at Office.com in…

Lucy spacecraft set to swing by Earth to reach Jupiter asteroids

A NASA spacecraft named Lucy, the first mission to the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, will skim the earth’s atmosphere, passing a mere 350 kms above the surface on October 16, to gain some of the orbital energy it needs to travel to this never-before-visited population of asteroids. The Trojan asteroids are trapped in orbits around the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter, either far ahead of or behind the giant planet. Lucy is currently one year into a 12-year voyage and this gravity assist will place it on a new trajectory for a two-year orbit, at which time it will return to Earth for a second gravity assist, NASA said in a statement. This second assist will give Lucy the energy it needs to cross…

Infosys will not end work from home; “current approach works”, says CEO

Pressed for talent and facing attrition, most IT companies have adopted a hybrid system which allows employees to work from office premises for a fixed number of days in a week and to work from home on other days. Infosys has gone a step ahead in allowing employees to work from home with no mandated fixed number of days in office, stating that the current system was working well for India’s second-largest IT services company. Infosys CEO Salil Parekh said the company will continue with its flexible approach with respect to employees working from home. “In our India offices, we have about 45,000 employees in the office at any given time, and this is huge given where we were a…

Twitter asks for birthdate from users to watch sensitive content

With an aim to prevent minors from viewing inappropriate material, Twitter is asking users to verify their birthdates for viewing sensitive content. According to TechCrunch, the micro-blogging site is gradually rolling out a feature to restrict sensitive tweets unless users have a birthdate attached to their accounts and are over 18. “We are constantly iterating on our work to give people more choice and control over their experience, as well as to make Twitter safer for everyone,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying. “We are slowly rolling out a feature to aid in restricting certain sensitive content from people who are under 18 years old or have not submitted their date of birth.” Several users noted that the microblogging platform had…

Microsoft discloses 85 vulnerabilities, no fixes for Exchange Server bugs

Microsoft has disclosed 85 vulnerabilities across its products in its October security update, including one that has been exploited in the wild and the other listed as publicly known. Of the 85 new patches released, 15 are rated critical, 69 are rated important and one is rated moderate in severity. The publicly disclosed vulnerability is in Microsoft Office which can put user tokens and other potentially sensitive information at risk. “What may be more interesting is what isn’t included in this month’s release. There are no updates for Exchange Server, despite two Exchange bugs being actively exploited for at least two weeks,” said Dustin Childs for the Zero Day Initiative. Microsoft revealed earlier this month that it was investigating two new…

Tech Tok: Cold War on internet targets US airports

The 80s’ and 90s’ kids will remember the Cold War, when all eyes were on what the United States and the erstwhile Soviet union were up to while trying to outsmart each other. The same Cold War, it appears, has moved onto the internet to leverage technology and is now targeting airports in the US. According to agency reports, an apparently coordinated denial-of-service attack organized by pro-Russia hackers rendered websites of some major US airports unreachable on Monday, though officials said flights were not affected. The attacks, in which participants flood targets with junk data, were allegedly orchestrated by a shadowy group that calls itself Killnet. Reports say that on the eve of the attacks, the group published a target list on…
