Chandigarh mayor election: BJP defeats AAP by 1 vote

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJPs) Anup Gupta won the Chandigarh mayor election defeating Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAPs) Jasbir Singh by a single vote margin on Tuesday.

A total of 29 votes were polled, of which Anup Gupta bagged 15, while Jasbir Singh Laddi secured 14.

BJP Chandigarh congratulated the constituency’s new mayor on Twitter.

The Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal abstained from voting

The house has a strength of a total of 35 councillors and one vote is reserved for the Chandigarh Member of Parliament.

The Congress party has six councillors, while the Akali Dal has one councillor, and all abstained from the voting.

If all councillors voted, the magic number would have been 19.

Last year as well, the BJP defeated the AAP by just one vote to win the position of mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

Despite winning the majority of seats in municipal corporation elections, the AAP has failed to win the mayor’s race for two terms in a row.
