Chilli farmer ends life in Telangana’s Khammam district

Uppalaiah had taken four acres on lease in addition to his own one acre to grow chillies, but couldn’t make enough money to repay his debts

Khammam: A farmer, Bonagiri Uppalaiah (43) of Mangalagudem village in Khammam rural mandal died, reportedly by suicide.

After receiving information from the villagers on Wednesday evening about Uppalaiah hanging himself from a tree in his field, his son rushed to the spot and found him dead.

The body was taken to the Khammam Government Hospital. After the postmortem on Thursday, his last rites were performed by the family in the village.

The police registered a case based on a complaint from Uppalaiah’s wife.

According to the family, Uppalaiah had taken four acres on lease from a farmer in the village in addition to his own one acre and cultivated chillies.

He took the crop to the Khammam market on Tuesday, sold it and returned home.

He was said to be deeply distressed as the money he received from selling the harvest was not enough to cover the debts and investments he had made.
