It has been two weeks since the newly-inducted Chief Justice of India (CJI), UU Lalit, took charge as the 49th CJI.

The Supreme Court has witnessed two action-packed weeks with numerous listings and considerable disposal of cases.

Important cases have been taken up, putting the nation’s eyes on CJI Lalit’s tenure and his plans for the top court, with a hope that the CJI would leave the top Court better than he found it.

Here’s a quick recap of what CJI Lalit’s second week as the Chief Justice looks like:

The CJI made his intention of clearing the backlog of cases, especially those which haven’t been listed even once, clear during the recent hearings.

“Many cases haven’t seen light of the day for last 15 months or so. We are trying to regulate. The bulk of matters is a lot, we’re trying to first clear that,” the CJI had said while hearing request for an urgent listing of case.

Supreme court Constitution bench led by CJI decided the questions of law which will be the basis of arguments while hearing case related to validity of the reservation policy extended to economically weaker sections. The SC will consider legal validity and contours of EWS reservation.

Over 200 petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 were finally directed to be listed. A bench led by CJI will hear the cases on September 12. Notice was issued in these matters in 2020.

After being jailed for two years since being arrested since 2020 in Hathras conspiracy case, journalist Siddiqui Kappan was finally released on bail by Supreme Court bench headed by the CJI.

Supreme Court bench led by CJI appointed Senior Advocate KV Viswanathan as amicus curiae in case challenging the extension given to ED’s Director.

While observing that petition was completely misconceived, a bench led by CJI dismissed a petition filed seeking directions to suspend the rights of Indian citizens residing within 24 vacant constituencies of the state of Jammu and Kashmir being illegally occupied by Pakistan.

The Supreme Court also asked the Ministry of Electronics Communication and Information Technology (MEITY) to give details on whether there is any standard protocol in place to shut down the internet during exams.

A bench of CJI UU Lalit, Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice PS Narasimha issued notice to the IT Ministry in a PIL alleging multiple internet shutdowns across five states.

After granting an urgent hearing, the Supreme Court stayed the demolition of Curlie’s restaurant in Goa. The restaurant owners had moved SC challenging National Green Tribunal’s order upholding an earlier demolition order on grounds of violation of coastal zone regulation.

A bench led by CJI also issued notices in pleas challenging the Places of Worship Act, 1991, on October 11.

A bench headed by the CJI upheld a Bombay High Court order which directed an insurance company to pay the farmers who lost their crop due to floods resulting from cloudbursts.

While addressing the lawyers the court remarked ‘This is a human problem and not an ordinary commercial policy. You are treating it as a commercial policy,”

Supreme Court bench led by CJI refused to entertain a petition filed seeking the arrest and calling for an independent investigation of the former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her alleged remarks against the Prophet Muhammad.

Supreme Court also agreed to grant urgent hearing to plea by a 17-year-old boy seeking that he be allowed to donate his liver to his 43-year-old critically ill father, who is suffering from acute liver failure.

Supreme Court bench led by CJI allowed urgent listing of cases related to stray dog menace in Kerala. The bench was informed that 12 year old girl was attacked by a dog despite taking anti-rabies vaccine and was in a critical condition
