Coldplay forced to cancel shows after Chris Martin contracts ‘serious lung infection’
Coldplay have pulled their upcoming performances in Brazil this month due to frontman Chris Martin being struck down by a lung infection.
The Paradise hitmakers were due to bring their hugely successful Music of the Spheres world tour to South America this October, with eight shows set for Rio De Janeiro and São Paulo.
However, it was announced on Tuesday that the British rockers will be postponing the Brazil leg to early 2023 to allow Chris, 45, time to recover.
‘With deep regret we’ve been forced to postpone our upcoming shows in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo until 2023,’ their statement began.
‘Due to a serious lung infection, Chris has been put under strict doctor’s orders to rest for the next three weeks.’
Coldplay continued: ‘To everyone in Brazil who was looking forward to these concerts, we’re extremely sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience, and we’re so grateful for your understanding at this challenging time where we need to prioritise Chris’ health.
‘We’re optimistic that Chris will return to good health after the prescribed medical break and we look forward to resuming the tour soon.’
They concluded: ‘To everyone affected, please accept our sincere apologies, and thank you as always for your love and support.’
Tickets for the rescheduled will remain valid but refunds are also available.
Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour began in March and has grossed almost $200million (£174m) so far. In August, the band performed a whopping six-night residency at London’s Wembley Stadium with support acts including Griff, H.E.R. and Laura Mvula.
Pending Chris’ recovery, Coldplay are scheduled to resume the tour on October 25 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The group recently revealed how they almost axed the tour entirely after facing financial issues.
Lead guitarist Jonny Buckland revealed: ‘We had quite a strange build-up to this tour. Lots of behind-the-scenes stuff was difficult, trying to make it green, and then suddenly it became really difficult to transport things around the world.’
Chris continued: ‘It became financially stressful, which we hadn’t had before. We’ve never really had a big financial crisis before.
‘This was the first time where there was a point where we felt we probably couldn’t do the tour due to all the money stuff.’
