From installing heaters, arranging wooden planks, covering with gunny nets to placing green shades, the Nehru Zoological Park has made elaborate arrangements to ensure its inmates stay warm and healthy this winter season
Hyderabad: With night temperatures dropping in the city, Nehru Zoological Park has initiated measures to keep its animals warm and healthy this winter season.
To ensure the animals’ body temperature remains normal, heaters have been arranged based on species in all night houses of carnivores, primates and bears. In addition, primate night houses are covered with green shade to avoid cold waves. Further, gunny cloths have been placed on the carnivores’ night houses to protect the animals from pneumonia due to cold weather.
As for birds, 75 percent of their night houses are covered with green shade net or gunny rolls and nest boxes equipped with insulated material have also been arranged to protect them from cold waves.
Night houses of the reptiles are provided with dry leaves, 100 watts clear bulbs, small clay pots and dens to protect themselves from cold winds.
“Air conditioning is stopped in nocturnal animal houses for three and a half months till mid of February 2026. Night houses of carnivores are provided with wooden planks to avoid cramps in the foot region. Neem leaves are burnt in Elephant Moat and in Giraffe night houses to avoid mosquitoes and winter waves,” the zoo said.
In addition, zoo inmates are being provided with B-Complex and Calcium supplements in their feed and water.
