Hyderabad: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has expressed concern over Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s recent comments threatening to publicly humiliate individuals posing as journalists and posting critical content. His remarks came after two journalists from Pulse News were arrested for publishing an interview critical of him.
On March 12, Hyderabad Police arrested reporter Thanvi Yadav and Pulse News Managing Director Revathi Pogadadanda. Police claimed their interview contained abusive content that could incite social unrest. Their mugshots were posted on social media, a practice usually reserved for criminals.
On March 17, the journalists were granted bail after spending five days in custody. However, they still face serious charges, including criminal conspiracy, promoting hatred and publishing obscene material under Indian law. If convicted, they could face jail time.
Speaking in the State Assembly, Revanth Reddy suggested that only government-approved journalists should be recognised. He proposed compiling an official list of journalists, warning that those not on the list would be treated as criminals.
