“Delhi Police has registered a case under various provisions against those who were spreading messages of hate, inciting various groups and creating situations which is detrimental for the maintenance of public tranquillity,” a senior police officer said. According to police, the FIR against multiple individuals cuts across religions and will investigate the roles of various social media entities in promoting “false and wrong information with the intent to create unrest in cyberspace” and thereby have ramifications in the physical space.
The FIR, the officer added, was intended to crack down on elements trying to compromise and disturb the social fabric of the country.
Delhi Police had earlier registered an FIR on the complaint of Nupur Sharma over threat messages she allegedly received following her remarks. Efforts to identify those who had sent messages are under way, cops said.
A case of outraging modesty, criminal intimidation and criminal intimidation by anonymous communication was registered at the special cell police station.
“During investigation, another complaint of Sharma was received against certain persons regarding promoting enmity. After examining the complaint, IPC Section 153A was added in this case. Notices have been sent to Twitter Inc. A reply is awaited,” a Delhi Police spokesperson said.
Sharma was expelled from BJP after the party distanced itself from her remarks.
