Destination USA: Here’s why US is preferred study abroad destination for Indian students

With many universities offering futuristic programmes and innovative studies, international students must make wise choices and thoroughly research right university/programme that fit their needs, skills, and goals

Hyderabad: Gone are the days when study abroad was only available to a privileged few with the right connections. The interest to study internationally has gained popularity over recent decades and has become a norm for most families in our country.

Quite often, after deciding to study abroad, students research the institutions for the programme to study. This is markedly different from the past when students used to choose their college/university depending on a specific programme that the institutions were valued for.

For many decades, the United States has been the preferred study destination for Indian students. This preference is the result of many factors. For those who have just begun to look up options, here is some information you may want to consider.

US educational system

The US educational system is not centrally organised or managed. The institutions are accredited by independent bodies on a regional or national level. The 50 States have over 4,700 accredited institutions.

Students’ assurance stems from the institution’s accreditation status as it warrants the value of the educational service provided to them. Students enjoy flexibility in the choice of majors/programmes, transferring to other majors after enrolment, pursuing multi-disciplinary study, and enrolling in accelerated courses leading to a combination of a bachelor’s and master’s degree over five years instead of the traditional 4+2 years.

Vibrant campus life

US universities attract and welcome students from around the globe. Students from different cultural and social backgrounds bring a glimpse into other cultures and economies.

There are designated offices on campus to care for and attend the needs of international students. The Designated School Official (DSO) is a valuable resource for an international student because the DSO is the go-to person for international students seeking clarifications.

Staying on campus in the first couple of years for undergraduate study or at least a semester for graduate study boosts one’s perspective on living independently in a co-dependent environment.

Academic opportunities

Having accomplished academicians, eminent scientists, industry experts, and research scholars teaching you is not only fascinating but is also motivating to charge ahead. In the last 80 years, the United States has attracted several Nobel Prize winners and other international awardees to move or visit to teach in their programmes.

Undergraduate students can design their majors by choosing the courses that they want to study and at times, based on the professor that they want to study under. In liberal arts and sciences colleges, students choose to study both arts and sciences, thus excelling in developing skills for a career and a lifestyle.

Networking

Networking at various university-sponsored events to attract the attention of renowned alumni is an opportunity no one can resist. For the research-minded, networking provides information on research openings even at the undergraduate level.

With many universities offering futuristic programmes and innovative studies, international students must make wise choices and thoroughly research the right university and programme that fit their needs, skills, and goals.
