Tummala Alivelu, 50, from Manneguda, Rangareddy, was declared brain dead at a Hyderabad hospital. Her family donated her liver and corneas under the State-run Jeevandan scheme, helping needy patients receive life-saving organs following official allocation guidelines

Hyderabad: Organs of a 50-year-old housewife, Tummala Alivelu, a resident of Manneguda, Abdullapurmet, Rangareddy district, who was declared brain dead by the attending team of doctors, were donated to needy patients by her relatives, as part of State-run Jeevandan organ donation scheme.

On October 14, Alivelu suffered acute vomiting and subsequently lost consciousness at her home. Her family members immediately rushed her to a private hospital in Hyderabad, where she was admitted to the ICU.

With her condition not improving and left with no option, the team of doctors from the private hospital attending to Alivelu declared her brain dead on October 21. Alivelu’s son, T Sai Vardhan Reddy, made the decision and gave consent to donate her organs to needy patients under Jeevandan. The surgeons retrieved liver (01) and corneas (02) and allocated them to patients based on the organ donation guidelines.
