Karimnagar Town-II police arrested five people, including a lactating mother, for attempting to sell a seven-day-old baby for Rs. 5 lakh. The mother, Sheelam Saisree from Visakhapatnam, was allegedly persuaded by her friends Abhinav and Hina to sell the child due to financial distress.
Karimnagar: The Karimnagar Town-II police arrested five persons, including a lactating mother, for attempting to sell a seven-day-old baby in Karimnagar.
According to police, Sheelam Saisree, a woman from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, had been living separately from her husband due to marital disputes. During her pregnancy, her friends from Hyderabad, Abhinav and Hina, provided her accommodations.
She gave birth to a baby boy at Gandhi Hospital, Hyderabad on November 14. Taking advantage of her financial distress, Abhinav and Hina allegedly advised her to sell the newborn, saying she would not be able to care for him. After she agreed, they struck a deal with prospective buyers from Karimnagar for Rs 5 lakh through middlemen Pallavi and Bhavani.
On November 20, the group arrived in Karimnagar and showed the baby to the buyers near Arya Hospital. However, an argument broke out over the payment. Growing suspicious of their behaviour, an auto-rickshaw driver alerted the police by dialling 100.
Police rushed to the location and detained the accused while they were accepting Rs 5 lakh from marriage broker Bhavani. The baby was rescued safely.
Police arrested the child’s mother, Saisree, and middlemen Abhinav, Hina and Bhavani, along with car driver Ashok, and recovered Rs 5 lakh from their possession.
