Gandhi Jayanti: The freedom fighter promoted khadi, benefits of wearing khadi clothes

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi was a lawyer and freedom fighter who led the way for India’s Independence movement. October 2 is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. From the non-co-operation movement to the satyagraha, Gandhiji paved the way for India’s freedom fight against the colonial rule.

During the fight for freedom, Gandhiji also promoted the use of local products and produce. He encouraged people to wear clothes made from local fabrics and on the other hand, he also wanted his followers to abandon products that were made outside of the country. Gandhiji used the famous charkha not just to promote Indian fabrics such as khadi and cotton, but he also used it as a powerful weapon of political revolution against the British raj. Here, take a look at the benefits of wearing khadi clothes, the fabric Gandhiji encouraged everyone to use.

  1. Khadi clothes are comfortable: This fabric is suitable for all seasons. Khadi is warm during the winter season and cool during the summer season which makes it extremely comfortable to wear at any given time of the year.
  2. Khadi clothes are durable: The clothes made from this fabric are extremely durable and you can wear them for a long time. They don’t get damaged easily and moreover, they are extremely cost-effective and pocket friendly.
  3. Khadi clothes have excellent quality: Clothes made from khadi are soft and also, there’s no chance of allergies since it is a natural fabric. Along with that, the clothes made from this fabric can be used for newborn babies.
  4. Khadi clothes are eco-friendly: Since it is a natural fabric, it is usually handmade or made using hand machines rather than big industrial machines. Moreover, these clothes are dyed using natural colours and dyes which doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment.
